What is “Bleisure?

When you first hear the term “Bleisure” your first reaction may be to yell out “Gesundheit!”  However, when you relate it to terms of travel, a sort of obvious combination of the words “Business” and “Leisure” begins to appear.  The term bleisure was first published in 2009 for The Future Laboratory, a consultant firm, as part of their biannual Trend Briefing.  Since then, the term has evolved and even since the pandemic another new trend arose: the “workcation.”  Whichever term you use, the idea is simple:  work hard, play hard!

With the increase in remote working, the already delicate balance between work life and home life has now found itself off kilter.  And because of that, the age-old question of “Business or Pleasure?” isn’t as straight-forward as it seems.  However, bleisure trips may be the answer these days.  By combining personal getaways with work, professionals today are finding the best of both worlds!

There are two main types of bleisure travel: professionals adding weekends or weeks to their work trips, and business trips taken with friends and family.  The most common trips that morph into bleisure trips are for conference travel, followed by external meetings and sales meetings, according to Expedia Group.  And such excursions are on the rise, and according to corporate travel manager TripActions Inc., the share of business trips that include a weekend has increased by 23 percentage points to 38% since 2019.

For a traveler, the primary advantages of bleisure travel are a boost in morale and reduction in stress.  And for a business, the increase of the number of employees who are willing to travel to conferences can result in improvements in productivity.  Another benefit is to the town or city, as travelers will now stay longer and spend more money in the process.
